Stephen Amell  recently complained at Salt Lake Comic Con about binging shows on Netflix and he explained that there is a format that they are forced to stick to because there is a die hard section of their fan base that watches the show weekly, but for the people who go to binge it on Netflix there is a lot of filler space and time because, well obviously we remember five minutes ago when the events in the previous episode happened. To remedy this, weekly shows like Arrow, Flash and Supergirl should have a binge cut that removes most of the exposition and the scenes that are designed to help us remember what happened last week. We’re not talking about the Previously On scenes but the scenes at the beginning of the episode where characters are talking to each other in order to remind you of what happened previously.

f8ba0ed7fea1734523635171ef731f0cOn September 10th Supergirl came to Netflix and so everyone who was unable to watch it due to CBS’s streaming and On Demand policies will be able to binge on it commercial free, and have the chance to be completely caught up by October 10, 2016 when the show makes its debut on the CW network. The only problem with this is that Supergirl was filmed for a traditional network television schedule which means that there are about 20 hours to get through, and while Supergirl doesn’t have entire filler episodes like some shows, I’m looking at you Supernatural, there are some weaker episodes that could be skipped and then be brought up to speed with the exposition on the following episode. To remedy that problem I’ve put together a list of essential episodes of Season 1 that need to be watched to appreciate the story.  In no way am I saying that this will be the BEST experience and there will be some subtle nuances in character development, and even sub-plots that you will miss, but this will get you caught up on the main story arc.

Okay Guys this is where the Spoiler line is drawn. if you don’t want to find out that Supergirl is Superman’s cousin I recommend that you depart now and check out the website for the spoiler free list. Twenty-four-year-old Kara Zor-El, cousin of Superman, who was taken in by the Danvers family when she was 12 after being sent away from Krypton, must learn to embrace her powers after previously hiding them.

The Scene where Kara decides to use her powers to save someone she loves is one of my favorite scenes of all TV, it pulls on all of my emotional heart strings. The sibling relationship that Kara and Alex remind me very much of the relationship that I have with my brother, and the way that Cat Grant is able to talk to everyone in the audience that hates the name “Supergirl” and make them see the potential strength is masterful.

Image result for green check markEpisode 2 – Stronger Together – WATCH

Kara must put doubts aside as she tries to apprehend an escapee from the Kryptonian prison; Cat pressures James for an interview with Supergirl.

This episode sets up a few themes that is played on throughout the season. That Supergirl has growth that needs to take place; that Cat Grant is obsessed with finding out any details about Supergirl, and the Supergirl’s Lex Luthor

Image result for red x mark wikimediaEpisode 3 – Fight or Flight – SKIP

Supergirl’s powers are put to the test when one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, Reactron, shows up in National City to take her down. In the meantime, Cat makes plans to run an expose on Supergirl.

This episode’s entire purpose seems to be to tell the common viewer that Supergirl is not her cousin.  So as long as you are able to keep them separate in your brain then you can skip this one.

Image result for green check markEpisode 4 – Livewire – WATCH

Kara’s foster mother visits for Thanksgiving, while an accident transforms a volatile CatCo employee into Livewire.

Aside from setting up some characters for the later in the season this episode fills in quite a bit of backstory and motivations. The one issue with the order that it aired was that Lucy Lane was not introduced properly.  If you are a completest or are into the whole James Olsen shipping then you may want to watch episode 5 before 4.

Image result for red x mark wikimediaEpisode 5 – How Does She Do It – SKIP

Kara must protect National City from a series of bombings and babysit Cat’s son, while James is visited by Lucy Lane.

This is the episode that was delayed due to the Terror Attacks in Paris.  It introduces Maxwell Lords as Kara’s Lex Luthor. If you care about the Love Triangle that is James Olsen you may want to watch this otherwise feel free to skip this one.

Image result for red x mark wikimediaEpisode 6 – Red Faced – SKIP

Stress makes Kara go too far during a training exercise against a military cyborg commissioned by General Sam Lane, while Cat’s mother comes to visit and Winn helps Alex investigate her father’s death.

Red Tornado makes an appearance in this episode and the theme seems to be that Kara needs to learn to control / channel her anger issues, while it is interesting character development it doesn’t further the story very much.

Image result for green check markEpisode 7 – Human for a Day – WATCH

Kara and her friends are forced to rely on their inner strength and courage when an earthquake strikes National City, while Alex’s mistrust of Hank reaches its breaking point when the earthquake traps them in the DEO with an alien escapee called Jemm.

This is one of the most motivational episodes of the entire season.

Image result for red x mark wikimediaEpisode 8 – Hostile Takeover – SKIP

Supergirl fights against her aunt and learns some heartbreaking news about her mom, while Catco is dealing with a hacker.

This is an entertaining watch, and makes some good points about white male privilege but does not really do much to move the story along with the exception of introducing Cat Grant’s son Adam who ends up being a romantic interest for Kara.

Image result for green check markEpisode 9 – Blood Bonds – WATCH

A standoff ensues between the DEO and Astra’s forces also Non kidnaps Hank, while Kara tries to refute Cat’s allegations that she’s Supergirl.

Image result for green check markEpisode 10 – Childish Things – WATCH – Lots of Character Development

Kara does her best to support Winn when he hears that his father Winslow Schott Sr. breaks out of prison. His father looks for Winn for a reason to become like him. Cat offers Lucy a job working at CatCo and Alex asks Hank to use his powers to find out and uncover Maxwell Lord’s plans.

I debated back and forth about putting this one on the watch list, but it contains a lot of character development for the supporting characters that end up being important for later in the series.

Image result for red x mark wikimediaEpisode 11 – Strange Visitor from another Planet – SKIP

Kara helps Hank face his painful past when a White Martian, who wiped out all of the Green Martians from Mars, kidnaps Senator Miranda Crane who is an anti-alien politician. Adam Foster who is Cat’s estranged son arrives in National City.

This episode’s purpose is to redeem Hank Crenshaw / the Martian Manhunter in the eyes of the audience, if you can find it in your heart to trust him again then you can skip this episode.

Image result for green check markEpisode 12 – Bizarro – WATCH

Kara must deal with a twisted version of Supergirl, while venturing into a possible romance.

Image result for red x mark wikimediaEpisode 13 – For the Girl Who has Everything – SKIP

A parasitic alien attaches itself to Kara and traps her in a world where Krypton was never destroyed, leaving Alex, Hank and the DEO to fend off a Kryptonian attack without her.

This Episode could be compared to the Flash’s Runaway Dinosaur where the team around the hero is dealing with things over their head while trying to get the hero back in the game.

Image result for green check markEpisode 14 – Truth Justice and the American Way – WATCH

Kara battles the Master Jailer while dealing with a second assistant at CatCo and disagreeing with James over the DEO’s methods.

Image result for red x mark wikimediaEpisode 15 – Solitude – SKIP

Kara travels to the Fortress of Solitude hoping to find information on how to defeat Indigo, a being from her past who can travel through the Internet. In the meantime, James and Lucy reach a crossroads in their relationship.

It’s hard to imagine how an episode that introduces Braniac and the Fortress of Solitude that could make it onto the skip list, but there is not much that happens in this episode aside from Kara, Alex and J’onn/Hank coming to terms about the death of Aastra not much happened.

During the Final 5 episodes the show really hits its stride and you need to watch each of them.

Image result for green check markEpisode 16 – Falling – WATCH

Red Kryptonite makes Kara malicious and dangerous while Cat appears on The Talk (2010) to discuss Supergirl. The

Image result for green check markEpisode 17 – Manhunter – WATCH

J’onn J’onzz reveals how he met Jeremiah Danvers and assumed the identity of Hank Henshaw.

Image result for green check markEpisode 18 – World’s Finest – WATCH

Kara gains a new ally when the Flash arrives from a parallel universe and helps her fight the Silver Banshee and Livewire in exchange for helping him return home.

Image result for green check markEpisode 19 – Myriad – WATCH

Non and Indigo use mind control to make the citizens of National City their army, so Kara must find a way to save her friends.

If you listened to my recommendation then you skipped Episode 15 and haven’t met indigo yet… she’s Braniac, basically a super computer and evil.  If you were confused about the blue villain then you’re up to speed now.

Image result for green check markEpisode 20 – Better Angels – WATCH

Supergirl is forced to do battle with an unexpected enemy as she risks everything – including her life – to stop Non and Indigo from destroying everyone on Earth.

How did I do?  Were there episodes that you would have kept? Or was I too cautious and is there something you wish would go.  Let me know by sending me an email to Feedback@Fandompodcast.com  I look forward to hearing your opinions, until next time: May the Fandom Be with You
