Free Comic Book Day 2017 Review

This last weekend, May 6th, was Free Comic Book Day. I really do love this event, mostly because it does get people out to their local comic book stores and gives them the opportunity to meet other people that share their same interests as well as hopefully giving them a place they can go to to feed that comic book addiction! I was fortunate enough to be able to help out my friends and fellow podcasters at The Nerd Store all day, I was also able to hang out with the amazing Chad Hardin as well! The amount of people that went through there kind of blew me away in the best way possible. The evening was capped off with a raffle in the store as well as a private screening of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. But what I really wanted to talk about here was the issues I was able to pick up on free comic book day and how I felt about them! So let’s get started.

Rick and Morty Issue #1

Written by: Zac Groman, and Tini Howard

Art by: CJ Cannon, and Marc Ellerby

Publisher: ONI Press

This is the first Rick and Morty comic I have ever read, and I must say as a big fan of the show I was not dissapointed at all. They really did manage to catch the “voice” of the characters really well. There are two stories in this one, first is titled “The Wubba Lubba Dub Dub of Wall Street”, ad the second is “Pocket Like You Stole It”. They were both pretty damn funny and I cannot wait to read more!

All-New Guardians of the Galaxy/ The Defenders

The Defenders

So here is another double issue from free comic book day, and this one I was looking forward too the most. The Guardians issue was pretty good, it had all the things that you expect from the title so I was not that surprised by it or overly impressed. I believe the accurate description of it would be meh. The Defenders on the other hand is probably 80% of the reason I picked this up. This is a preview for the new Defenders title launching in June 2017. This iteration of the team is the one any one who watches Marvel’s Netflix properties will recognize. Luke Cage, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist. I am beyond excited for this and this only added to that excitement!

Star Trek: The Next Generation Mirror Broken

Written by: David Tipton & Scott Tipton

Art by: J.K. Woodward

Publisher: IDW

Any fan of Star Trek knows a good episode to throw in every once in a while is one involving the Mirror Universe. There, basically everyone has different personalities and good guys are bad guys etc. This book takes place in that universe and is actually really well done! Some people have issues with licenced property comics but if they are done well i see no problem with them. This issue is well done and has me interested to read more.

The Tick

Written by: Ben Edlund

Art by: Bob Polio

Publisher: New England Comics Press

SPOON! I have not read a Tick comic in YEARS! So this was one I really had to pick up. There are a few stories in this issue but they are all classic Tick. This issue may not get me to jump into the Tick Comic universe, but it did get me pumped for the Tick Amazon Original Series coming out later this year!
